The muse of Szeged Art Nouveau

2023. Aug. 30. | Community

In cooperation between the Colourful City Group and RTL, three spectacular firewalls have been created this year: after Budapest and Pécs, the latest one was completed in Szeged, courtesy of RTL. The firewall painting was the subject of several designs, of which the residents of Szeged chose an Art Nouveau-style painting, the design of Enikő Váczy, by public vote.

RTL and the Colorful City Group three firewall murals have been completed in different parts of the country. After Budapest and Pécs, the third work now decorates the firewall of the house at Székely row 21 in Szeged. Before the painting work started, the people of Szeged had the chance to vote for two of the designs in a public vote. One of the designs, created by the advertising agency Artificial Group, evokes the modern architecture of Szeged's world-famous contemporary landmark, the Eli-Alps Research Institute. The other winning design is an Art Nouveau-style painting, Enikő Váczy and his team. The muralist graphic artist was inspired by a character he invented, the muse of the Szeged Art Nouveau, and this figure was brought to life on the fire wall.

The Municipality of Szeged has always supported initiatives to beautify the city, and several murals with different themes have been painted. The Colourful City Group came up with some great creative proposals for the beautification of the Székely sori building, and the art nouveau-style artwork chosen by the voting features the Tisza, the symbol of our city, the sun and the muse of Szeged. Although the work is one of the largest paintings in Szeged, it is a lovely and unobtrusive sight on this huge wall surface, of which we can all be proud," said Sándor Nagy, Deputy Mayor of Szeged.

In working with the Colourful Cities Group, our common task was to translate the locally relevant storytelling intent that best characterises RTL in Hungary to the local level, and to create murals that build on the most familiar or defining element for the inhabitants of the city. In Szeged, it was clear that Art Nouveau, which dominates the cityscape, was such a story. A motif referring to the way content is consumed today was also smuggled into the visual world of the mural, as RTL is becoming a protagonist on more and more screens. We are confident that we were able to delight the people of Szeged with this mural," said Balázs Rényi, marketing strategist for RTL.

Thank you: this was the word we heard most often from the people of Szeged who came to see us while we were painting, but many of them showed their hearts, clapped or just waved on the way, which signs could be seen even from 30 meters above the ground - said Péter Flór, secretary general of the Colourful City Group.

More than four years ago, the editor of the Szegeder.hu website contacted us, as the Hungarian organization with the most experience in the field of firewall painting, to try to implement art projects in Szeged, but the openness of RTL and the help of the municipality made it possible this year to realize this dream project, and this proved to us once again that, in addition to partners and persistent work, it is worth believing and patiently waiting for such a successful project to come to fruition - added Péter Flór.

In cooperation with RTL and the Colourful City Group, three murals were created in three cities, Budapest, Pécs and Szeged. In Budapest, the first RTL firewall was completed at Krisztina körút 30, depicting the history of Hungarian television and content consumption with playful, pop art-style elements. The painting in Pécs colours the firewall of the house at 40 József Attila utca, a geometric shape in the op-art style of Vasarely's work, with its cheerful colours. The works were created with the involvement of the local authorities, taking into account the protection of the townscape.

Colors Underground – The Iváncsa Underpass Gets a New Lease on Life

For a long time, the underpass at the Iváncsa train station was just another one of those familiar, functional, yet impersonal spaces. A place people pass through but don’t linger in. Today, however, it offers a completely different experience: colors, shapes, and stories accompany travelers along the way. The decoration is not only a visual renewal but also an imprint of a community-oriented vision—the identities of three towns converge here with László Varga’s unique perspective.

Adam Illes – Reflections

His work titled *Reflections*, installed on the wall of Stratford Junction, explores a theme that is both personal and universal: connection. Not an encounter in the superficial sense, but that rare and elusive moment when two people truly see one another.

When Paint Turns to Glass – Glass Angel

Street art is often about quick gestures and raw energy, but there are works that speak more of patience, precision, and a carefully constructed visual experience. CSM’s work titled “Glass Angel” is the final piece in a four-part mural series that not only posed a serious technical challenge but also holds personal significance for the artist. The transparency of the glass symbolizes fragility, the angel represents beauty and love, while the dark and light tones in the background symbolize the duality of the world.
