Rubik's cube mural in central Seoul

2023. Oct. 5. | Community

In the Korean metropolis, the artists of Neopaint Works have created.

In Seoul, the capital of South Korea, he was invited by the Hungarian Cultural Centre and Kofice to Neopaint Works team to create a mural promoting the Rubik's Cube in the city's commercial district, Gang Nam. The metal surface, 80 metres long and 10 metres high, features the cube and its name, as well as a mural of Ernie Rubik holding his invention.

The graphic design was created by a team of painters from Budapest, based on the ideas and requirements agreed in advance. The whole project took 6 days to complete, with the help of 3 Korean painters. The monumental street painting was created in time for next year's Rubik's jubilee year, when Ernő Rubik will turn 80 and the cube 50.

In addition to the anniversary, another important reason for the painting is that this year the World Rubik's Cube Puzzle Championships were held in Seoul, where the winner completed the task in 5.31 seconds.

Rubik-kocka

This is not the first time that Neopaint Works has painted a Rubik's cube: almost ten years ago, for the anniversary of the painting, a fire mural was painted in the centre of Budapest, in Rumbach Sebestyén Street, District VII. Since its almost 20-year existence, the group has completed hundreds of commissions of all sizes, but its main activity is decorating public firewalls and urban surfaces. In addition to Budapest, their 70 or so large-scale paintings in various themes and styles can be seen in other cities.

Colors Underground – The Iváncsa Underpass Gets a New Lease on Life

For a long time, the underpass at the Iváncsa train station was just another one of those familiar, functional, yet impersonal spaces. A place people pass through but don’t linger in. Today, however, it offers a completely different experience: colors, shapes, and stories accompany travelers along the way. The decoration is not only a visual renewal but also an imprint of a community-oriented vision—the identities of three towns converge here with László Varga’s unique perspective.

Adam Illes – Reflections

His work titled *Reflections*, installed on the wall of Stratford Junction, explores a theme that is both personal and universal: connection. Not an encounter in the superficial sense, but that rare and elusive moment when two people truly see one another.

When Paint Turns to Glass – Glass Angel

Street art is often about quick gestures and raw energy, but there are works that speak more of patience, precision, and a carefully constructed visual experience. CSM’s work titled “Glass Angel” is the final piece in a four-part mural series that not only posed a serious technical challenge but also holds personal significance for the artist. The transparency of the glass symbolizes fragility, the angel represents beauty and love, while the dark and light tones in the background symbolize the duality of the world.
