MetaMask Card: a crypto debit card for everyday purchases

2024. Sep. 22. | Web3

MetaMask, a popular crypto wallet, launches a debit card. No bank is needed to spend cryptocurrencies. This not only paves the way for greater acceptance, but is also in line with MetaMask's vision of empowering people to take care of themselves.

The MetaMask in partnership with Mastercard and Baanx (Crypto Life), launches the MetaMask Card, a crypto debit card that allows users to spend their cryptocurrencies directly from their MetaMask wallet on everyday purchases.

The MetaMask Card pilot gives people more freedom to spend their crypto. It is a significant step towards removing the friction that has traditionally existed between blockchain and real-world commerce. It is a paradigm shift that offers the best of both worlds." said Lorenzo Santos, Senior Product Manager at Consensys

In line with this, according to Simon Jones, Commercial Director at Baanx:

We're excited to be partnering with MetaMask, the leading wallet on the web3, to drive the financial revolution by enabling users to be their own bank.

This pilot project is only available to a limited group of users in the EU and the UK. If you want to know if you are eligible, simply log into your MetaMask portfolio and check the "Card" tab in the left navigation bar. Eligible users with the Card tab will be redirected to the Crypto Life platform where they can set up their account and card.

Speed up cryptographic receipt by removing barriers to issuance

For too long, the process of spending cryptocurrencies in the real world has been cumbersome and often involved jumping through a series of hurdles, such as sending money to an exchange, transferring it to a bank and only then spending it. This tedious user journey has been a barrier to the uptake of cryptocurrency as a practical, real-world currency.

The MetaMask Card takes this experience a step further by eliminating the need for a bank to spend your crypto. This not only paves the way for greater acceptance, but is also in line with MetaMask's vision of empowering people to take care of themselves.

Most traditional cryptocards work in a similar way to prepaid cards, where you have to transfer the money to a third party before spending it.

What makes the MetaMask card unique is that it works like a bank card. This means that cardholders can use the crypto in their MetaMask wallet directly for everyday purchases and keep their funds under control right up to the moment of payment.

The MetaMask Card uses Mastercard's global merchant network, combined with the security of MetaMask and the efficiency of Linea, powered by the Ethereum network. This trio provides a fast, cost-effective and secure shopping experience, whether you shop online or in-store.

Phasing in the MetaMask card for global expansion

The pilot phase will start in the EU and the UK and will offer a few thousand users the opportunity to register for a MetaMask card, which will include integration with Apple Pay or Google Pay for instant use. Currencies accepted at launch include USDC, USDT and WETH on Linea.

A Bitcoin értéke maga a hálózat

The value of Bitcoin lies in the network itself

Throughout history, the value of money has never been determined by its material composition alone, but rather by the shared trust and social agreement that made the exchange of value possible. Bitcoin fits into this history spanning thousands of years—in a new, digital form. For the first time in history, Bitcoin enables millions of people to operate a shared financial network without central control.

Bitcoin – Mi volt Satoshi valódi zsenialitása?

Bitcoin – What Was Satoshi's True Genius?

Bitcoin didn’t appear out of nowhere in 2008, but was the result of a long intellectual journey. And perhaps this is where the figure of Satoshi becomes more human: not a mystical genius, but someone who recognized what others had previously seen only in isolation. His genius may not have been a new invention, but rather a realization. Satoshi did not build the financial system of the future alone; rather, he recognized how the work of others fit together.

The Legacy of Nick Szabó – From Bit Gold to Bitcoin

One of the most important figures in this story is a computer scientist and cryptographer of Hungarian descent: Nick Szabó. The history of Bitcoin is often centered around a single name: Satoshi Nakamoto. Although he did not write the Bitcoin white paper, nor did he launch the Bitcoin network, many view him as the person who was already thinking about the same problems years before Satoshi.
