Mr. Zero talks about his visit to Berlin
The history of last year's visit to Berlin dates back to 2019. An old friend of ours, originally from Vienna but who moved to Berlin a few years ago, contacted me about organising a jam with international graffiti artists in spring 2020, to which they would like to invite Fat Heat and me. Everything was already set up, if I remember correctly they booked our flights, started the promotion, and then in March 2020 the unexpected guest, the covid, arrived.
At first they tried to push it through, but eventually this event was cancelled, like many others around the world at the time. Everyone knows the story for the next 2-3 years, open / close, travel / no travel, event / no event.
In 2023, after some time off, I started travelling again and among other things I got in touch with this friend who was in Vienna around this time, so I went to see it. Amongst other things, this topic came up, that it was a pity that this event was cancelled, it would be nice to make up for it at some point.
So we started talking about it and it turned out that they organized an event for October, the main theme of which was "50 years of hiphop", to which several of me (Fat Heat, TransOne, Angel 26 and Imre Fork (who unfortunately didn't get the date right)) were invited from Hungary.
I basically come from a punk/hardcore/metal background, nothing but graffiti connects me organically to hiphop, so I couldn't identify so deeply with the 50th birthday of hiphop as a theme. However, music and underground culture has always been my main inspiration.
Hiphop and punk emerged at about the same time and both were steeped in social criticism and were basically rebellious, so it seemed like a good handle. A lot of my work has always carried those kinds of messages even if not in a very clear, lip-service way.
For the last couple of years I've been experimenting with layering different font styles at the same time, as a reaction to the information overload, digital noise that surrounds you. I combine this with various characters from my own post-apocalyptic cyberpunk universe.
