2025. Jun. 19. | Recommended

Two Hungarian teams were among the winners of the international Rebranding Termoli competition, which attracted 400 entries from all over the world. The winning Hungarian projects managed to do so with sensitive storytelling and visual consistency.

The aim of the international competition was to a new image for the city of 33,000 inhabitants on the Adriatic coast. The competition, which aims to redefine local identity, was won by the Italian team, with Hungarian artists taking second and third place, ahead of shortlisted teams from Brazil, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, among others.

  • 2nd prize - Krisztina Bozzai, Renáta Vaskó
  • 3rd prize - Szilvia Biai, Adrienn Halász

The jury was made up of design professionals from Italy, Spain and Cuba, looking for urban design concepts that are both original, site-specific and applicable to urban space. The winning Hungarian projects were able to achieve this with sensitive storytelling and visual consistency.

Call for proposals

The Terraviva - Rebranding Termoli competition aimed to develop a new, comprehensive urban identity for Termoli, Italy. The call was not just for a logo design, but for a complete visual system: an image that could represent the city's historical heritage, cultural specificities and contemporary aspirations. The competition placed particular emphasis on creating a visual language that builds on local identity and works authentically in urban spaces, from transport to tourist interfaces.

The result and the international field

The results of the Rebranding Termoli competition were announced on 30 May 2025 as part of the Premio Termoli overall art prize. Out of the nearly 400 entries received, the jury awarded three prizes and ten special prizes, and shortlisted 30 teams. Two Hungarian teams were among the three winners, with Krisztina Bozzai and Renáta Vaskó winning 2nd prize and Szilvia Biai and Adrienn Halász winning 3rd prize. The 30 shortlisted entries include designers from Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Germany, India, USA and the UK, demonstrating the diverse and truly international character of the shortlist. In addition to the 3 winners, 10 flagship concepts are on display at the MACTE (Museum of Contemporary Art Termoli) until 20 September.

"In our interpretation, the image of Termoli is in fact already present in the fabric of the city; we have reinforced this with our concept. We went there at the end of March and were immediately struck by the way the mosaics permeate the streets, the seafront promenade, the public spaces and everyday life: they are not just decorative elements, but landmarks, meeting places and part of a shared memory. This logic has been carried through to the overall identity: a logo with a stone-effect, fragmented lettering, a Mediterranean colour palette and a visual scheme that emphasises the logic of fragmentation, easily adaptable to urban spaces, digital interfaces, publications or even morphs. We were looking for a visual language that both builds on the character of the place and is able to unify the historical and contemporary faces of Termoli. Our goal was to create a system that does not invent the identity of the city, but rather amplifies it, makes it recognisable and continues to be thought about."

3. award-winning material (Szilvia Biai, Adrienn Halász)

"The image is based on the geographical and cultural character of the city: beach, historic old town, Mediterranean atmosphere, cultural experience. The central element is the arch as a recurring architectural form (old town gates, windows, doors), which organises the logo and graphic elements into a visual system. The colour palette draws on local sources (sea, sunlight, walls) and the typography is modern and restrained. Our aim was a timeless, authentic image that speaks to both locals and visitors."

Joint statement of the winning Hungarian teams

"For us, the most exciting part of the job was being able to creatively connect with the past and vision of an Italian city - all while maintaining the benefits of the outside eye. It was particularly important for us to visit Termoli in person and draw inspiration from the impressions and atmosphere we gathered on the ground. The unique character of the city encouraged us to create a visual identity that authentically reveals its historical, cultural and community layers, while remaining unified and uncluttered. We are delighted that the jury appreciated not only the aesthetic aspects, but also how we reflected on the deeper relationship between city and identity.

We are confident that this result will encourage other Hungarian designers to enter the international arena - after all, at the opening of the exhibition in an Italian city, which included the award ceremony, Hungary was for a moment seen as a design nation."

Dragonfire Mission - storybook

We have grown up with traditional fairy tales, but now we have to pass them on to our children in a modern guise. The book is adorned with beautiful full-page colour illustrations and a wealth of exciting inter-textual graphics to keep young readers/listeners engaged. The drawings echo the motifs of medieval frescoes and codices. This modern tale, rooted in our past, has been put to paper by Zsoldos Prize-winning author Ágnes Gaura Gaura.
