The képező latest exhibition of the gallery, whose concept focuses on the relationship between street art, pop culture and art history. The street art artist, who has maintained his anonymity for years, prefers to combine popular fairy tale characters with various pop and socio-cultural phenomena.
0036mark is a name that will be familiar to anyone who has encountered the iconic characters of the cult Hungarian fairy tale films and cartoon series before the fall of communism on the streets of Budapest. His work may also include cult films of the postmodern era, as well as contemporary art and cultural history references. In transforming the personas of familiar fairy-tale characters, Márk employs the tools of appropriation art based on a critical attitude.
He gives the fairy-tale characters unique character traits, not only placing them in a new pop-cultural or art-historical context, but also communicating social and systemic critical ideas. In addition to this, 0036mark's creative process, which is essentially based on character borrowing, is central to the mission of the Picture Gallery, as is the transmission of knowledge through classical and contemporary art.

In his solo exhibition, Márk shares his thoughts on the accessibility of high art, the contemporary relevance of the products of the 'pop culture industry', the importance of art history and the educational potential of visual arts. - says Rebeka Kovács, art historian and curator of the exhibition.

This exhibition is also exciting in terms of Mark's art, because it showcases his extensive knowledge of art history much more than his previous works have done. Here is a taster of one example. The Lonely Pom Pom a tableau by Csontváry Tivadar Kosztka Lonely cedar and his painting Pom Pom puts the title character of a cartoon on a picture plane.

The chosen technique is collage, not only combining the two artworks, but also creating a moving visual unity by layering different layers of paper and painting solutions. With this image, Márk is breaking new ground in street art, as his works literally separate from the wall and become portable as panel paintings, yet somehow these works resemble stripped down wall elements, and can be said to bear the hallmarks of the genre. Three other elements of the series are on display in the gallery, alongside many other 0036mark works.

The exhibition is open from 2024.12.06 to 2025.02.07 at the KÉPEZŐ Gallery during opening hours in Keleti Károly utca 13/A.
