Arbitrum is one of the most popular Ethereum scaling solutions designed to speed up transaction times and reduce Ethereum fees. It has a strong community and a diverse ecosystem.
Using the Ethereum network can be slow and expensive until planned updates speed things up in the next few years. To speed up the process, scaling solutions have emerged in the meantime that sit on top of the Ethereum base layer. The Arbitrum is just such a scaling solution and has become a popular place for Ethereum users to complete their transactions.
What is Arbitrum?
The Arbitrum an Ethereum layer-2 protocol that allows developers to build and run more scalable smart contracts at lower cost. The Arbitrum chain will allow developers to use Web3 applications, deploy smart contracts, etc. but transactions will be cheaper and faster. The team's flagship product, Arbitrum Rollup, is an Optimistic roll-up protocol that inherits Ethereum-level security.
On 23 March 2023, Arbitrum distributed the new ARB token, which allows owners to vote on network decisions. Arbitrum has thus completed the long-awaited transition to the DAO-to a decentralised autonomous organisation.
Arbitrum is cheap and fast to use, and sends all transaction information back to the main Ethereum blockchain. While Ethereum handles only 14 transactions per second, the Arbitrum speeds up to 40 000 transactions per second.
Arbitrum is one of the cheapest networks to conduct transactions with an average fee of $0.26.
Arbitrum also supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) application, which means that Ethereum DeFi developers can integrate their decentralized applications (dapps) with Arbitrum without modifications.
Arbitrum is the Offchain Labs created by. The company raised a total of $120 million in a Series B financing round in September 2021.
How does Arbitrum work?
Abritrum's Layer 2 solution uses blockchain summarization for efficient transaction processing. The aggregators use a two-layer architecture to process transactions outside the chain before sorting them inside the chain. The advantage is that the blockchain no longer needs to validate separate transactions - it can directly validate a "summary" batch of transactions.
This scaling solution is different from other Layer 2s, such as side chains, as the wrappers are usually derived from the main blockchain.
Arbitrum's scaling solution uses a certain type of summation, called optimistic summation.
What is the optimistic summary?
"Summarisation" is a data compression technique for blockchain transactions. It involves "aggregating" batches of transactions into a single transaction.
The optimistic aggregation is based on the optimistic assumption that most transactions are valid. A costly verification process is only performed when there is a dispute. Network participants can start disputes within a week because of incorrect receipts. If erroneous blocks are present, the validator who approves them loses the assurance. However, this complex fraud detection process also means that it takes a week to process withdrawals from the chain.
Arbitrum ecosystem characteristics
According to a 2023 developer report, the Arbitrum chain is one of the fastest growing Layer 2 solutions, with developer headcount growing by more than 50% annually. Thanks to the exponential growth of development, the Arbitrum ecosystem is now made up of many different elements. Let's look at the main products - Nitro, Nova, AnyTrust, Orbit and Stylus - and how they differ from each other.
Arbitrum Nitro
Arbitrum Nitro is a major technical update to the underlying technology of the Arbitrum One ecosystem. Nitro makes it faster, EVM-compatible and cheaper. Nitro achieves this by introducing interactive proofs running on Arbitrum's WASM code.
With Nitro, developers can use standard EVM-compatible languages and run unmodified EVM contracts. This has opened up development opportunities and attracted more developers.
Arbitrum Nova
Arbitrum Nova is a new chain that focuses on reducing individual transaction costs by reducing data storage on the Ethereum blockchain. Transaction data is available through third-party "data availability committees" - some hosting providers such as Infura and Google Cloud.
In contrast to Arbitrum One, which stores all transaction data on Ethereum, Nova only uses Ethereum to store data signatures from these companies. This naturally makes Nova more centralised. Thus, Nova sacrifices some of the security of the Ethereum blockchain to reduce transaction fees and increase scalability.
Arbitrum Nova is particularly useful for games and social dApps with a high number of transactions but a low unique transaction value.
Arbitrum AnyTrust
AnyTrust is the solution for applications that require high security and extremely low costs.
Arbitrum AnyTrust offers best-in-class security, relying on the trust's minimal data availability committee (DAC).
Arbitrum Orbit
The universe of chains. Arbitrum Orbit is the ideal way to start your own individual chain without permission.
Orbit chains are powered by Arbitrum Nitro, the most decentralised and advanced technology powering blockchain ecosystems. The security of Arbitrum Nitro is unmatched, so builders and users can have confidence in the reliability of their chains.
Arbitrum Orbit enables builders to select the right technology components for their users' needs and the chain's goals without compromise.
Arbitrum Stylus
Stylus will enable a new way of writing smart contracts by introducing a second, peer-to-peer virtual machine that fully interacts with EVM.
A powerful new way to build on Arbitrum.
Stylus-compatible Arbitrum chains support your preferred programming language, so you can write smart contracts the way you want.
Arbitrum Token: What is ARB?
ARB is the native ERC-20-compatible management token for the Arbitrum blockchain. ARB holders can vote on proposals that may affect features, protocol updates, fund allocation and Security Board elections. The Security Council is a 12-member group elected by Arbitrum DAO participants and is responsible for managing risks within the arbitration ecosystem.
This token provides the community with the foundations and future of Arbitrum and Ethereum.
Arbitrum DAO
Arbitrum DAO will not be controlled by any organisation. Token holders may transfer or retain their voting rights. Decentralised governance is an emerging concept and we are purposefully giving the community space to guide its development.
Arbitrum governance should not pick winners or losers, but should promote open innovation, collaboration, user choice and healthy competition in Arbitrum chains.
Arbitrum community
Within Arbitrum, entire ecosystems have been created with their own language, emojis and culture. Fuelled by a thriving community, the team-building Arbitrum itself has expanded.

To raise awareness of the Arbitrum brand, the Arbitrum Foundation targeted selected conferences such as the global ETH events, Token2049, Permissionless, and Korea Blockchain Week, as well as the Consensus event.
The Consensus event is the world's largest, longest running and most influential gathering bringing together all aspects of cryptography, blockchain and Web3.
In addition to the third party events, the Arbitrum Foundation coordinated a series of in-person and virtual events called "Arbitrum Days".
Ambassador programme
Through its ambassador programme, the Arbitrum Foundation matches university students around the world who are interested in a career in blockchain development.
Ambassadors will have the opportunity to hold in-person events on campus, fully funded by the Arbitrum Foundation, and propose initiatives for funding to the Foundation, among other benefits.
So far, the Foundation has approved 96 ambassadors in 26 countries, out of nearly 2,700 applicants.
Ambassadors have so far held five Arbitrum satellite events in Italy, Nigeria, Vietnam and Kenya.
As always, the Foundation remains committed to being a community-first organisation.
The numbers don't lie - Arbitrum chains lead the industry thanks to a talented and passionate community.
